Master Categories provide an additional level of filters to make it easier for supporters to navigate a catalog with 300+ items, often from a small phone screen.

Master Categories provide broad filters - such as Entertainment:

Note that breadcrumb paths are provided on each screen to help users see where they are, how they got here and to jump back to previous levels.
To Enable Master Categories:
Go to Site Settings > Items > Catalog > Navigation & Views
You can create your Master Category structure without enabling this setting (which makes the Master Categories display in your Public Catalog - whether or not items have been added yet.) To preview, use the Public View button in the Admin gridview of the Catalog, or logout to see the public view.
To Configure Master Categories:
Go to Site Settings > Items > Catalog > Master Categories
Default Master Categories with item category mapping has been provided as an example but you can create whatever structure works best for your event. Click the Delete All Master Categories button if you want to start with a clean slate.
Note that Item Categories may be assigned to multiple Master Categories.
